Pascal Mora’s image of a man holding up a white cloth in front of a hotel in Zurich deals with lost honour. Originally taken for the New York Times, the picture does the opposite of what we expect of a news picture: it conceals. And yet it stands at the beginning of an ugly exposé (Winner News).
Black and white and reduced to an abstract image: In his striking contribution to the Zoom Fotoblog Tages-Anzeiger/Der Bund, using the example of avalanche barriers, Kaspar Thalmann documents the gargantuan efforts that are being made in order to save one small village (Winner Daily Life). The report for reformiert-saemann by Daniel Rihs, about the Feast of the Holy Trinity celebrated by Eritrean refugees, touchingly guides viewers into another world, which nevertheless is not a foreign one (Winner Swiss Stories).
Gazing into the face of this 101 year old woman, one might wonder what those eyes have seen. Mara Truog took her portrait for Migros Magazin (Winner People). This slider on the Cresta Run Saint Moritz, on the other hand, would have probably preferred to avoid the gaze of spectators. Arnd Wiegmann captured his spectacular tumble for Reuters: One person’s misfortune can have amusing results (Winner Sports).
And finally, a magical moment of pure passion and consummate happiness. Is this not a little inappropriate, when the world is a powder keg? No, it is just the right image at a time of wars and disasters, misery and suffering. The photographic essay by Niels Ackermann, which emerged from the edge of the Chernobyl exclusion zone and was published in Das Magazin, L’Hebdo, Le Temps and the SonntagsZeitung, shows people who defy devastation and counter it with everything, their despair as well as their sensuality (Winner World).
