René Pretre, a heart surgeon at the Children's Hospital in Zurich and Swiss of the Year in 2010, operates on children with heart disease in Maputo, Mozambique, once a year for eight days. His foundation, Le Petit Coeur, ensures that children with congenital heart defects have a chance even in countries with inadequate medical care. Thanks to René Pretre, the little boy Laerson, whom I was privileged to accompany, can look forward to a carefree future.
