Lélo, for life and death

Nicolas Brodard

Each year on Easter Saturday the inhabitants of the Georgian village Shukhuti play Lelo Burti. Those living in the upper half of the village play against those from the lower half. The first side to get the 16 kg ball into the goal of the opposing team, wins. The game is reminiscent of Rugby, but there are no rules – anything goes. After the game, the ball is placed on the grave of a recently deceased player.
