The portraits were taken as part of a study on girls and sports, in two baton twirling clubs (in Lausanne and Chavornay) and two football clubs (in Renens and Geneva). These two sports are often stigmatized, for different reasons, and these clubs serve a social integration function for girls from working-class backgrounds. The photos were taken in March 2013. All parents have signed a publication authorization.
