Sarah Carp
A work that had been selected for the Swiss Press Photo 09 exhibition and that I completed in August 2009. From a testimony on stem cell donation, the work took the direction of a tribute to a brother, a work on the bond and on the place that photography plays in supporting a sick person, etc. I am the author of the photographs and the subject of the articles published in 2011. My text presenting the work: This photographic encounter is above all a story of life, sharing and love. I began to photograph my brother Henri the day I learned that he had leukemia. My camera became my best ally. It formed a barrier between the world and me. It observed me during my own stem cell donation to my brother and it accompanied us and connected us throughout this life experience. At the beginning, it was I who needed to photograph him. At the end, it was he who asked to be photographed. The donation allowed me to offer hope and combat my feelings of helplessness. Henri followed his path, he left sooner than expected. Sarah Carp Henri died on August 5, 2009 at the age of 23 at the family home. The images were taken in Switzerland; at the University Hospital of Lausanne, the University Hospital of Geneva, Yverdon-les-Bains, and Lausanne.
