Immigration and its consequences were one of the dominant themes of 2014, both in the city and in the countryside, where a divide is often invoked. At the height of the debate about the welfare-receiving rate, we visited and listened to Biel, the city with the highest such rate in Switzerland. And three weeks before the vote on the Ecopop initiative, which claimed that Switzerland was being covered in concrete, we visited a place that had remained unchanged for around seventy years.
