National soccer team Switzerland at the FIFA Russia World Cup

Laurent Gillieron

On 22nd June 2018, Switzerland wins against Serbia, at the World Cup in Russia. The double-headed eagle goal-celebration, symbolic of the Albanian flag, becomes a bigger story than the victory itself. Swiss Granit Xhaka performs it having scored the 1:1 equaliser, Xherdan Shaqiri follows suit, having brought the score to 2:1. The two dual-nationals are accused of making the gesture in order to provoke the opposing team. The Football Association FIFA penalises them with a fine of CHF 10 000 each.
