A portrait by Alessia Schwelger for the NZZ am Sonntag. The 4-year-old girl suffers from the rare Aicardi syndrome (Alessia is completely paralyzed, suffers from daily epileptic seizures, has severe mucus production that leads to shortness of breath, is fed through a nasogastric tube, and is visually impaired). Approximately 900 families care for their severely disabled child themselves. They are at a significant financial disadvantage compared to parents who place their child in a care home.
