A streak of blood in a field hospital

Gianluca Grossi

In March 2013, the province of Deir ez-Zor, in eastern Syria, was embroiled in war without any news coverage, with international media focusing primarily on Aleppo. This reportage tells the story of a surgeon, Dr. Abdulmalik Al Fannad, who, in an abandoned school and using makeshift equipment, operated on wounded civilians and Free Syrian Army fighters. Photograph 1_HOSPITAL was published in Regione Ticino, while others in the series were included in the author's television report, "Syria: Silence We Die," broadcast on Falò on March 28, 2013.
