Surgeon (of war) in the forest.

Gianluca Grossi

Khader Amar Becki suffered a stroke a year ago when his son was killed by unknown assailants. Sinjar, the town where he had always lived, was overrun by Islamic State militants. The population, mostly Yazidis, fled. Those who survived the fundamentalist violence describe horrific scenes. Khader, who is completely paralyzed, was carried by his children and wife throughout the journey to the village of Ba'adre, in northern Iraq (Kurdistan), where they found shelter in a house still under construction. His wife told us: "No one helps us; we're left to fend for ourselves." My husband needs medical care and medicine, which we don't have.
