Rebecca Hillauer

Carlos Schuler, originally from Uri, has lived in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo for 30 years. He witnessed the consequences of the genocide in neighboring Rwanda and the three Congo Wars. During all this time, Carlos Schuler has campaigned for the protection of the gorillas there, and with his Congolese wife, he also runs an aid project for raped women and their children. At the premiere of his autobiography in his home village of Bürglen, Uri, Carlos Schuler, along with family and friends, recount how he came to live in eastern Congo, what he experienced there, and how global politics are reflected in his personal experiences. The title of the book expresses this: Life and Survival in the Congo - Gorilla Conservation and Family Life in War.
