Maundy Thursday, 17 April 2014, in Mendrisio: In the evening all street lights are turned off and a group of amateur performers re-enacts the suffering of Christ in a traditional Easter procession. Christ is followed by the linen cloth carrying Mary Magdalene, the thieves, the roman soldiers and the Jewish people – all wearing gorgeous colourful garb from the costume collection of La Scala in Milan.

Thomas Kern wurde 1965 in der Schweiz geboren. Nach seiner Fotografenausbildung in Zürich war Thomas Kern seit 1989 ausschliesslich als Fotoreporter unterwegs. 1990 ist er Mitbegründer der Schweizer Fotografenagentur Lookat Photos. Ein zentrales Thema seiner Arbeit während vieler Jahre sind die Auswirkungen von Krieg und Konflikten auf den Alltag der Betroffenen, zum Beispiel in Nordirland, Kurdistan, Ex-Jugoslawien und Haiti. Von 1998 bis 2006 lebte er als freischaffender Fotograf in San Francisco. Thomas Kern ist zweifacher Gewinner eines World Press Awards und erhielt mehrere Eidgenössische Stipendien. Seine Arbeiten wurden in Ausstellungen in der Schweiz und im Ausland präsentiert und seine Bilder sind in diversen Sammlungen vertreten.
