The first mention of the term “femicide” in its modern meaning, as “the killing of a woman by a man for reasons of hatred, contempt, pleasure or a sense of possession of the woman,” is from 1977 in the work “The Raped” by journalist Maria Adele Teodori.

I started this project in March 2025, when I realized how the word “femicide” was increasingly entering our homes through the local and foreign press. It is a growing problem in Switzerland too, which prompted me to create symbolic images that could represent its meaning universally.

Flavia Leuenberger Ceppi, born in 1985, attended the CSIA arts school in Lugano, Switzerland, where she graduated in 2004 with a degree in graphic design. After a few years of experience in the field of photography, in 2010 she set up her own freelance agency offering both graphic design and photographic services, flanking her commercial activity with personal works: in 2013 she started the project “Moghegno-Monterey” dedicated to swissitalian emigrants, where in six trips she portrayed different families in the United States and Australia, this project (along with “swiss rocks”) was exhibited in October 2022 at the Swiss consulate in San Francisco. In 2015 she won the first prize at the Swiss Press Photo Award in the portraits category. In 2023 she won the second prize at the Swiss Press Photo Award in the portraits category.
