This is an account of the work of so-called "early-stage" lawyers who intervene in cases of a certain seriousness. In Geneva, I was able to follow these defenders in the intimacy of the visiting room and during the hearings, which always take place behind closed doors, in order to recount the meeting with the accused, the face-to-face with the police, the appearance before the prosecutor and the detention judge.
