“Going to Europe, that’s simply to stop getting raped all the time!” The roughly forty women the RTS North African correspondent met at the Médenine refugee camp in Tunisia are almost all pregnant or have given birth to a child by their rapist. Some were “arrested” in Libya by men posing as police, locked up in houses where they were raped every day, before being put on a boat, pregnant. Others were snatched in Tunisia and forced into prostitution. Their statements are difficult, because not everything can be said in front of a microphone. Even in the refugee centre, they are afraid of being abused or raped again. There is only one reason why they desperately want to go to Europe: that the rapes stop.
