The Morandi Bridge, named after its engineer Riccardo Morandi, collapsed in Genoa on Tuesday, August 14, 2018, killing at least 39 people. More than 600 residents had to be evacuated as a safety precaution to prevent further deaths if the viaduct collapsed. The bridge was one of Europe's busiest highways, with 25 million vehicles passing annually.
