Research by Landbote editor Mirko Plüss triggered the "Wärmering Affair" in the spring of 2016. At its core was a failed energy project whose impending bankruptcy had been concealed. As a result of the affair, a city councilor in Winterthur resigned and two senior officials were dismissed; two legal investigations were initiated, and a referendum in Frauenfeld was canceled.
