When tragedy rocks a school (Swiss Press Text 2015, by Carlo Silini) - Swiss Press Award

Carlo Silini
What are the psychological consequences for young survivors of catastrophic events? This is the question Carlo Silini asked after two young women were killed when a block of flats collapsed in Davesco near Lugano in November 2014. Avoiding sensationalism, he explores the response of the crisis management team at the secondary school attended by the 12 year old son of one of the victims. The author spoke with the teachers and the head of the school in order to illustrate the fear of death and general anxiety the young people experienced, and the importance of psychological support for the affected pupil and his school mates. A first step on a long and difficult journey back to normality.
