Gertrud Arnaboldi and Doris Meier are both suffering from dementia. They have decided to opt for assisted suicide. The problem is: people with dementia are only able to receive assistance, for as long as they are still capable of judgment. This raises the question: are people with dementia forced to end their lives prematurely? In his contribution, journalist Thomas Vogel gives voice to the son of Gertrud Arnaboldi. Max Arnaboldi describes the peaceful and self-determined way in which his mother departed her life. In Doris Meier’s case, only her grandchildren know about her plans. They help their grandmother fulfill her final wish. Psychiatrist Raimund Klesse is against assisted suicide for dementia patients. He states that those people with dementia who he has attended through life, have lived a relatively contented old-age, providing an alternative point of view to that of the two women – who could not imagine a dignified existence with dementia.
