After the approval of the mass immigration initiative, we went to the Basel metropolitan area to investigate: Why was support so high in a suburb considered particularly left-wing? We met a resident, an elderly Bernese who has lived there for decades and is president of the neighborhood association. He spoke of anonymity, of loss of identity, of immigrants who no longer understand German. He was incredibly open – but he remained silent about what his association members voted for.
