A plethora of data, encompassing all of Roger Federer’s games, shows how the tennis pro has remained at the very top of the game, with “stamina, humility and hard work”, for two decades. Federer’s unprecedented career is narrated through the trajectory of his world ranking, broken down into four periods. An interactive graphic illustrates his rise between 1998 and 2004 – which is slow but steady compared to that of other top players. This is followed by the period of invincibility (until 2010), during which only Rafael Nadal can possibly hold a candle to him, and the dethroning (until 2016), during which Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray ascend. After a knee injury, finally in 2017 the comeback at the Australian Open, where Federer wins a Grand Slam title for the first time in five years. He has 20 of them to date – and there are even more impressive figures: out of 1389 games played, Federer lost less than a fifth (18 %).
