In Cambodia, with miners digging with their bare hands

Alberto Campi

The Ratanakiri region (northeastern Cambodia) is known for the blue zircons hidden deep within its land, torn from the rainforest. Without stairs or ropes, the men of a freelance mining community dig shafts about fifteen meters deep to earn their living. The precious stones will be resold by intermediaries on the international market.
