Wadi al-Salam (Valley of Peace) is one of the oldest and largest cemeteries in the world, in use since the seventh century. It is located near the Shiite holy city of Najaf in Iraq. I visited the cemetery in spring 2020 during a severe COVID-19 outbreak in Iraq to document the work of the gravediggers and the rituals of Shiite burial culture.
