Greti Schranz knits for the city's poorest

Eleni Kougionis

Recently, someone from Schwarzer Peter, the Basel street work association, picked up another hundred socks from her. "With each pair, I give some good thoughts," she says. Ms. Schranz is 96 years old and lives in Münchenstein. When she's not knitting in her armchair by the window, she watches football, makes herself something to eat, or watches the sparrows on her balcony.
