92 avalanche deaths in the record-setting winter of 1951 brought about the end of the protection forest above St. Antönien in Grisons. Instead, one of the most commanding systems of avalanche barriers in the Swiss Alps was erected. These structures of concrete and steel, which are up to four metres tall, form a geometry of peculiar beauty when viewed from afar.
