Chläus Anderegg is only 15, and yet this is already his third year of looking after an alp at the foot of the Säntis mountain. While his parents run a farm in Urnäsch, he spends the six weeks of his summer break up on the alp, all on his own, ensuring that everything runs smoothly. Every now and again he gets a visitor, he says, and he’s never bored. And during term time, the high school student rides his motorbike to the alp every day, where he milks the ten cows, mucks out the stable and makes sure all is well. His parents lend him support, to make sure he gets enough sleep. The young alpine herdsman doesn’t mind the hard work – the alp is his life. Once the work is done, he sits on the bench in front of the house and enjoys the view on the Säntis, which glows red in the sunset. When asked about his intended career, Chläus Anderegg doesn’t hesitate: he wants to be a farmer.
