What’s more important: the protection of unborn life, or a woman’s right to self-determination about her body? And is there an objectively definable cut-off point for ending a pregnancy? The authors delve into these questions. They consulted two legal scholars, a philosopher, a medical ethicist and a neuroscientist. None of them stipulated a particular time limit, or identified a widely recognised set of criteria for setting such a limit. With the help of pictures and texts, readers are led through the different stages of pregnancy: at times from the point of view of the developing foetus, at times from the perspective of the woman, and at other times the two are considered in tandem. The perspectives of the experts add to the picture at every stage, and the legal position for termination in different countries is quoted. Finally, the readers can cast their vote: What is your cut-off point?
