Washington vs Trumpland (Swiss Press Audio 2017, by Philippe Revaz) - Swiss Press Award

Philippe Revaz

Before the presidential elections, Philippe Revaz – correspondent for RTS La Première in the USA, wanted to enable an encounter between two worlds with little in common: “Blue America”, world of the Democrats and the Washington establishment, and “Red America”, that of the Republicans, the Trump-voters and the rural population. Accompanied by Mark Levine, a Washington “insider” complete with diplomas, he traveled to the small towns of the Appalachians in West Virginia, where the decline of the coal industry has left the population with no prospects, feeling abandoned by Washington. Juxtaposing the two worlds, it becomes clear that the two Americas can no longer talk to each other because they speak a different language, and each camp is mired in its own media world. It’s increasingly difficult for the different sides of America to find any common ground.
