The island in the Indian Ocean is strategically coveted. Diego Garcia is one of the most important US military bases. The small island community paid the price for this. In the 1970s, they were deported. The deportation is not among the most violent chapters of the colonial era. Yet their fate illustrates, on a small scale, the arrogance of the colonial rulers of that time.
