The Big Mouths of Parliament (Swiss Press Online 2018, by Paul Ronga) - Swiss Press Award

Between 2013 and 2017, just five men accounted for 17 percent of all the speaking time by all Geneva parliamentarians. Dominant men in their fifties or sixties are the chatterboxes of the Grand Conseil, the cantonal parliament of Geneva. Paul Ronga, for Le Tribune de Genève, conducted a word count from the minutes and thus established a ranking of the most garrulous parliamentarians. The numbers showed an inequality in talking-time between individual parliamentarians, between men and women, and between the different political parties. The results are available both, at the level of the entire parliament, as well as for each individual member. In addition to this, the individual views of around a dozen parliamentarians, graphics, videos, photos and texts combine to create a better understanding of the phenomenon. The conclusion: women have less ego and speak only when necessary.
