Zarifa Ghafari ran for the position of the new mayor of Maidan Shar and surprisingly won. In spring 2019, Zarifa Ghafari became one of the first women in Afghanistan to take office as mayor and, despite death threats from the Taliban and ISIS, continues to advocate for women's rights.
