Doomed Paradise – The last Penan in the rainforest of Borneo

Tomas Wüthrich

Since 2014, I have been documenting the daily lives of the last remaining hunter-gatherers of the Penan people. Their semi-nomadic lifestyle in the rainforest of Sarawak, Borneo, is acutely threatened by illegal logging and palm oil plantations; it's a life caught between tradition and modernity. The Penan became internationally known through environmental activist Bruno Manser, who disappeared without a trace in the jungle in 2000.
