It was in the Northern Iraqi city of Mossul that the Islamic State originally proclaimed its caliphate. In 2017, the city was recaptured by Iraqi forces and an international alliance after a long struggle. In February, June and December, journalists courageously made the eventful journey to Mossul in order to show how the war affected the soldiers and city dwellers. There were four reports: about a general on a visit to the front; about the fate of the civilian population; from a military hospital at the front; and for the fourth contribution, the team returned to the devastated Old Town half a year after the battle with residents, where IS had held on until the end. The reports not only testify to the horrors, but also to the absurdities of war, such as the story of an ice cream vendor who runs his business just behind the front line.
