I met vigilante commander Christian Yingling in 2017 after he participated in the Charlottesville riots, and stayed in touch. I visited him at his secret residence near Pittsburgh in June 2020. This article establishes a closeness to a man with questionable ideas without losing journalistic distance. The goal: to understand the extremism of Trump voters.
