The Russian city of Norilsk is considered the northernmost major city in the world. In winter it gets bitterly cold and sledding at minus 20 degrees Celsius is not uncommon (137). Even during the April of 2018 there is still a cross-country ski taking place (138). The ­pictures taken in summer feature two boys warming themselves in the steam of a pipe (135), women waiting for their appearance at a bridal contest (136), and the entrance hall of a fish shop (139).

Der Fotograf Beat Schweizer (geb 1982) verfolgt neben Auftragsarbeiten persönliche Projekte mit einer klar dokumentarischen Haltung. In seinen freien Fotoserien interessiert er sich für Menschen und deren Umgebung in unbekannten, bisweilen abgelegenen Gebieten östlich der Mitte Europas (und darüber hinaus). Seine Fotografien und Eigenpublikationen wurden in England, Frankreich, Russland und der Schweiz in Institutionen wie dem Fotozentrum in Winterthur, dem Photofoum Pasquart in Biel dem Lumiere Center of Photography in Moskau oder ROSPHOTO in St. Petersburg gezeigt. Unter anderen Auszeichnungen hat Beat Schweizer 2016 den ersten Preis beim «Swiss Photo Award» gewonnen. Zurzeit zeigt er in der COALMINE seine Arbeit «Anzeichen der Verlässlichkeit» in einer grossen Einzelausstellung. Seit 2012 hat er den Alltag im peripheren und zum Teil nur mit einer Sonderbewilligung zugänglichen Norden Russlands dokumentiert. Diese Arbeit erscheint Ende Jahr in Buchform beim Kehrer Verlag.
