On the Centovalli train, between Santa Maria Maggiore and Locarno, Rosanna – who was a little girl over seventy years ago, tells her story to Nora – a little girl today, who is travelling with her father. Alessandro Bertellotti takes us back in time to the Second World War, when thousands of children from all over Europe found refuge from war and misery, in Switzerland. Little Rosanna, then four years old, happened to find herself in Cadenazzo, where Antonio and Pace Benzoni welcomed her as the son they had been dearly wishing for. Only at bath-time did they realize that they had a little girl staying with them. The story that Nora will pass on to her schoolmates is about the amazement of those who had nothing, and suddenly discovered toys, chocolate, sweets or just white bread made from flour instead of potato peelings, at Christmas. The support of children, organised by the Red Cross, was a moment of great solidarity that enabled Rosanna and many like her to find comfort in a family before they could return to their own.
