Firefighting foam from the premises of an aluminum packaging company in Goldach entered Lake Constance in quick succession in 2020 and 2021. It contained the long-banned and environmentally harmful chemical PFOS. The contamination of the drinking water reservoir serving five million people only became public through a penal order. Politicians are demanding clarification and harsher penalties for environmental offenses.
