These precious silkworms

Didier Martenet

Ueli Ramseier, 55, and his wife Bettina raise 30,000 silkworms each year in Hinterkappelen, in the Bernese countryside. At the end of their four-week fattening period, these silkworms, Bombix mori, devour nearly 70 kilos of organic white mulberry leaves per day in a specially designed room heated to 22 degrees Celsius, without excessive light.
