In June 2024, one of Europe's most successful show cows died in a lightning strike in Sumiswald. The news was picked up by several trade magazines, but I was interested in the story behind it: How does the show and breeding scene work, how natural is cattle breeding in 2024, and what financial implications does the cow's death have for the owner's family?

Nach dem Hauptstudium Bachelor of Arts in Medien- und Kommunikationswissenschaften an der Universität Freiburg hat Marius Aschwanden zwei Praktikum beim Berner Oberländer und beim Frutigländer absolviert. Bei letzterem erhielt er 2011 eine Festanstellung als Redaktor. 2012 wechselte er in derselben Funktion zum Berner Oberländer. Von 2015 bis 2021 war er als Redaktor und die letzten drei Jahre als stellvertretender Ressortleiter Kanton Bern bei der Berner Zeitung tätig. Seither ist er in der fusionierten Redaktion von BZ und Bund angestellt.
