In Moudon in the canton of Vaud, the turnout in the 2015 federal elections was 36.9 %. With a view to the 2019 elections, Mise au Point launched an experiment to better understand the reasons for the low participation. The goal was to achieve a participation of more than 50 % in the October elections. “Politics is boring. The language of the politicians is too complicated. When the envelope with the voting materials arrives, I chuck it straight in the bin,” admits a 23-year-old resident of Moudon. Working with the local authority and local political groups, the journalistic duo Cécile Durring and Jérôme Galichet tried to find out whether the phenomenon is inevitable or whether it is possible to increase participation in the next national election. The goal was to reach 50 % in 2019. The result: a slight increase – in the end the turnout was 45.4 %.
