Switzerland brought hundreds of thousands of guest workers into the country in the 1950s and 1960s. They had to leave their families behind; family reunification was not permitted. Children grew up with their grandparents, were placed in institutions, and hidden in apartments. Many of these children live among us today, left alone with their history. There have been hardly any reports so far, and the process of coming to terms with this has only just begun.
