The punishments imposed on the Assad regime have cut the Syrian population off from the world. Everything was smuggled. Nescafé was especially popular. It promised a small taste of normalcy. And in a country like Syria, which has experienced so much war, torture, and death, normalcy is perhaps the feeling people yearn for most. A visit to the smugglers' village.

Karin A. Wenger wuchs ohne Fernsehen im behüteten Thun auf. Gutbürgerliche Kindheit, fleissige Schülerin, las stapelweise Bücher. Im Gymnasium überforderte sie die Studienwahl, weil sie sich für alles interessierte. Sie machte ein Praktikum beim Thuner Tagblatt, war begeistert, und studierte Journalismus in Winterthur. Arbeitete u.a. bei SRF 10vor10, im Auslandressort der NZZ, bei Blick, und ging weiter zur Uni, um mehr über den Nahen Osten zu lernen. Schreibt als freie Journalistin, am liebsten aus der arabischen Welt.
