Helen Kaspar was the first woman elected to St. Gallen's city council 35 years ago. With Maria Pappa, St. Gallen will have the first female mayor in history. The fact that she will be able to take office in 2021, the year that marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Swiss vote for women's suffrage, is symbolic.
