Since Basel lifted the begging ban last summer, Roma beggars have been a constant topic of discussion for Basel politicians and the media. I have accompanied the beggars repeatedly over several months. Most recently, I spent a night with them in the winter cold and wanted to know: How are they doing? And: Why can't they return to their homeland?
