Diplômé de l’Ecal, c’est en Iran que Claude Baechtold développe son travail photographique en collectionnant de manière compulsive la voiture nationale iranienne (prix fédéral des arts appliqués 2002). Il devient reporter de guerre en Afghanistan où il fonde le collectif Riverboom, couvre le conflit irakien en 2004 puis le Pôle Nord (grand prix Images Vevey 2006) avant de s'installer deux ans à Pékin. Auteur de Switzerland versus the World, il a écrit pour l'Hebdo, le Matin Dimanche, et Nzz am Sontag. Il se spécialise dans les travaux photographiques personnels ("Tout ira bien", nominé prix Elysée 2018) et le journalisme d'investigation (Béton la fin d'une ère, heidi.news 2021). Il adapte actuellement cette dernière à une bande dessinée qui sortira à Paris en septembre 2022 aux presses de la Cité.
