Hobby Horsing

Jonathan Labusch

“Hobby horsing” is the name of the sport in which participants jump over obstacles on hobby horses, like here on 28th October in Stetten, near Schaf- fhausen. The participating girls and boys are aged between 5 and 16 years, and all kinds of “breeds of horse” are in the stalls (159). Timea Truong (160) sews her horses herself and says: “It may look childish, but it is demanding.” The hobby horses are given a number and personalised decoration (161). The tourna- ment follows strict rules: Alice Niederer measures the height of the obstacles (162). Nora Wintermantel (163) rides the Hanoverian mare Infinity: “She is a bit difficult, suspicious, and not easy to ride.”
