A referendum on a merging of cantons is a rare event of great importance. The Regionaljournal Basel therefore devoted a week-long special series with live broadcasts to the possible merger between Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft. The team went to various communities and towns to gain a sense of each of the population’s attitudes. This resulted in non-representative surveys with about 150 participants each. Despite the lack of scientific rigour, the mood reflected in the data coincided with the subsequent rejection of the proposed merger at the ballot box. In particular, the research accurately predicted the massive NO vote in the suburbs.
