Destroyed and flooded houses are pictured during the groundbreaking ceremony of reconstruction the village, project "Blatten 2030", 3,5 months after a landslide destroyed the village, in Blatten, Switzerland, Friday, September 19, 2025. On May 28, 2025, the village of Blatten in the Loetschental Valley, Canton of Valais, was devastated when a section of the Birch Glacier collapsed, sending an avalanche of rock, ice, and debris into the valley. About 90% of the village, including 130 houses and the parish church, was buried. The debris blocked the Lonza River, creating a large lake and raising concerns about flooding. Reconstruction of the village is planned to be completed by 2030. (KEYSTONE/Laurent Gillieron)
