A global IT glitch almost paralyzes Zurich Airport. (News 2025, by Gaëtan Bally) - Swiss Press Award

Passengers look at screens informing them of the flight situation, on Friday, 19 July 2024, at the airport Zurich in Kloten, Switzerland. Due to a worldwide IT breakdown, check-in for air travellers and flight operations are severely restricted and most flights are delayed or cancelled. Swiss air traffic control Skyguide is also affected by the IT disruption and has reduced the capacity of Swiss transit traffic as an immediate precautionary measure. (KEYSTONE/Gaetan Bally)

On Friday, July 19, in the middle of the summer holidays, a global computer outage shut down much of the world. The editors called me to check on the situation at Zurich Airport. Many passengers were sitting in the aisles, most flights were canceled, and only a few planes taking off added noise to the chaos.
