Participants travel on an SBB train through the western tube of the Gotthard Base Tunnel on the occasion of the first journey through the NEAT Base Tunnel from Bodio to Erstfeld, on Friday, August 30, 2013. Representatives of the companies involved in the shell construction, project developers and the consortium responsible for railway technology, as well as media representatives, traveled from Bodio in the canton of Ticino to Erstfeld in the canton of Uri. Participants traveled the 57-kilometer route not only by train, but also by bus and on foot, as AlpTransit Gotthard announced on Friday, August 30, 2013. It will take about 1,000 days until the world's longest tunnel is ready for operation, according to the press release.
